Benefits of a Preharvest Weighbridge Calibration

Harvest is the busiest time of year for many of our customers and you want to be 100% certain that you have done everything you can to make sure all your equipment has been serviced and checked ready for the rush. The consequences of key machinery breaking down at this vital time are expensive and time consuming.

Your weighbridge doesn’t just have to keep working, it has to keep working accurately and reliably. Therefore calibration checks should ideally be carried out every 12 months and what better time to have it done than just before the harvest rush? We think this should be as much a part of your annual routine as taking your car for its annual MOT.

If Trading Standards decide to drop in unannounced in the middle of harvest and find your weighbridge is reading inaccurately, they have the power to shut it down. That could result not only in lost revenue and time during harvest time, but also in a loss of customer confidence if you fail to fulfil their orders on time.

You might also end up inadvertently overloading your trailers and lorries. This has serious consequences and if the overloaded vehicle is stopped by the DVSA, it could result in prosecution and fines.

What is a Weighbridge calibration?

Calibration is the means by which a measuring device is checked against a known standard to ensure that its readings are accurate within prescribed tolerances. When it comes to weighbridges and scales, this is achieved by checking its readings when the scale is loaded and then unloaded with traceable weights. If you are the owner of a trade weighbridge, by law you have to make sure that it is maintained so that you can be certain that it is weighing within legal tolerances. The only way to do that is to have it calibrated on a regular basis.

Parkerfarm Calibrations

We recognise the importance of harvest time for farmers and understand how essential it is that they can rely on their key equipment at that time of year. Having your weighbridge calibrated just before harvest means that it’s one less thing to worry about when you’re rushed off your feet. That’s why we offer farmers a pre-harvest calibration check at a special discount.  Parkerfarm will carry out your weighbridge calibration using certified weight sets and in accordance with the procedures laid down by the UK Weighing Federation’s Calibration Code of Practice.

Our engineers will also check that key elements of your weighbridge are not likely to let you down.   After all this you will be issued with a UKCA certificate of compliance. This will give you the confidence to enter the harvest period knowing that your scale is working correctly and will provide you with legally compliant measurements – not just throughout the harvest period, but into the following year.
